MY STORY
I’m no stranger to the plant-based lifestyle.
I was raised as a vegetarian and, thanks to my parents, kale was cool in our household back in the 80s and exercise was ingrained into my earliest routines and rhythms. But even with a solid foundation, I felt crushed by the pressures of diet culture and found myself spiraling in an exhausting journey towards achieving physical “perfection.”
Enter burnout.
As a former scientist, I worked long hours. I suffered from sleep deprivation. I was stressed out and constantly falling ill. Headaches persisted as a normal occurrence in my day-to-day well-being. I was the girl eating my veggies at lunch and fitting in my 6 am barre classes, yet feeling tired and stressed out all the time. I was visiting various medical practitioners and undergoing multiple testing procedures to figure out what exactly was going on with my gut, only to be sent home with a CVS prescription for digestive enzymes.
I thought my lifestyle was normal. Healthy, even! In reality, I was misinformed and exhausted from trying to keep up with an unattainable standard of perfection.
What I didn’t know is that my high levels of stress, insufficient sleep patterns, long working hours and poor nutrition were working against my health.
I was stuck in a constant state of fight or flight. My adrenals were shot from years of chronic stress, under the surface emotional wounds, toxic thought patterns and not making a priority of my physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Being aware of the existing health disparities in African American culture, I made the decision to take my health into my own hands and figure out a path that was real and sustainable. I was sick of the quick fixes. I needed something that worked long-term.
It all began to shift when I got REALLY serious about fighting for my health.
Through advanced studies, research, working with a team of wellness practitioners and learning to reconnect to my body, I was able to achieve harmony and wholeness again. I began to cut out toxic foods, relationships, and scenes that weren’t serving me. I embraced a lifestyle of whole foods, self-respect, and self-care. I watched my health completely transform the more I implemented small steps towards total health.
Today, my headaches are nonexistent, I no longer get sick all the time, and my digestion is the best it’s ever been.
